Bridge Data Centes and Bytedance Celebrate Grand Opening of the First Phase Hyperscale Data Centre (MY06) in Johor, Malaysia
Bridge Data Centres (BDC), a leading data centre provider across Malaysia, India, and Thailand, celebrated a significant milestone today with the grand opening of BDC’s first phase hyperscale data centre (MY06) in Sedenak, Johor. Phase 1 covers the first of three buildings in the 110MW hyperscale project, spanning 38 acres of land. Leveraging innovative construction methodologies, the project was completed in record time of approximately 2,200,000 working hours (314 days) since breaking ground in November 2021. The project received full support from federal and state governments, including the Digital Investment Office (DIO), a collaborative platform between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).
The grand opening was attended by the Chief Minister of Johor and other dignitaries, marking Malaysia’s success in attracting data centre investment. It aligns with the country’s goal of attracting RM70 billion in digitalisation investments under the MyDIGITAL initiative.
Also present was Datuk Wira Arham Abdul Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of MIDA, who expressed excitement about BDC choosing Malaysia for this hyperscale data centre venture. MIDA, through the DIO and Project Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU), has supported the project from its early stages, facilitating electricity requirements, land matters, and water needs.
“Today's event shows that Malaysia remains the most desirable location for data centre hubs in the region. With vast resources, a favorable environment, and advanced digital infrastructure, Malaysia is well-positioned as a regional data centre hub,” added Datuk Wira Arham.
BDC is the first company with Malaysia Digital status to complete and hand over a business-ready hyperscale data centre in 2022.
On behalf of MDEC, CEO Ts. Mahadhir Aziz congratulated BDC, noting that the facility enhances latency and efficiency while attracting global businesses to Malaysia. The project adds momentum to the Malaysia Digital initiative, a national strategy to accelerate the country's digital economy.
With growing demand from cloud service providers and digital media, BDC has full support from Bain Capital to expand its hyperscale data centre business across Southeast Asia. The company plans to build another 100 MW of data centres over the next five years in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
BDC’s President expressed gratitude for the support received from the Digital Investment Office, Invest Johor, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and looks forward to a long-term partnership with the Malaysian government.
ByteDance will be the anchor tenant for BDC’s hyperscale data centre, committing to long-term investments in Malaysia’s digital economy. Teresa Tan, Director of Public Policy for Southeast Asia at ByteDance, highlighted the importance of this partnership for providing secure, interconnected online experiences globally, while working with the Malaysian government on expanding data governance leadership.
The grand opening ceremony at Sedenak Tech Park (STeP) included a traditional Malay Kompang performance and blessings from dignitaries for future success.
